Who was Charly Kaufmann?

* 25.03.1936 † 01.09.2008

Carl (Charly) Kaufmann was the first European 400 metres sprinter to run the race in under 45 seconds. In the 1960 Rome Olympics he received a silver medal in the 400 metres, where together with the American Otis Davis he achieved a new world-record of 44.9 seconds! This was the age of cinder-tracks where electronic timing equipment had just been introduced alongside the traditional stopwatch. The gap between Otis Davis and Carl Kaufmann was calculated to be just 1/200th of a second.
